Coffee is one of the most popular beverages globally, and triple-brewed coffee is another hidden gem in the coffee world. Millions of people start their day with a cup of coffee, but not all coffee is created equal. Some love a double brewed espresso, cappuccino, latte, or a black with sugar, and baristas take precise steps that help them prepare the perfect cup of coffee every time for their patrons.

What is Triple-Brewed Coffee?

Triple-brewed coffee, or “Triplo” in Italian, refers to a triple shot of espresso pulled from coffee grounds. A triple shot is equivalent to three triple shots.

To make a triple-brewed coffee, you will use freshly brewed coffee instead of water. You will brew a coffee and then use the same coffee to brew a second and a third cup by pouring it over freshly ground coffee beans. The goal is to have a concentrated and flavorful coffee.

To make a triple brewed coffee, place approximately 21 grams of coffee grounds into each of three special filter baskets. The already-brewed coffee liquid is brewed twice more with fresh grounds for precisely the same time as a regular single-brewed coffee.

When you consume a triple-brewed coffee, you will notice it will help you wake up in the morning. However, it is intense on the palate. If you have a good espresso machine with a standard portafilter, you can get a triple-shot basket inserted into a portafilter and brew your coffee.

But what is a portafilter? A portafilter is an extraction device used in espresso machines to hold and guide the coffee grounds (puck) during the brewing process.

A single portafilter holds one shot, while a double portafilter contains two espresso shots. On the other hand, a bottomless portafilter can hold three espresso shots and more at a time.

What Makes a Good Triple-Brewed Coffee?

Brewing is a chemical process that extracts flavor from coffee beans. The more complete the extraction, the stronger the coffee. Factors affecting this process are:

  • The grind of the coffee
  • The freshness of the grind
  • Water temperature
  • Contact time
  • Amount of ground beans versus water

The brewing time depends on the ratio between coffee grounds and water.

A simple rule of thumb is to brew 4 minutes for every 1 gram of ground coffee.

This ensures that all compounds present in the grinds are dissolved in the water and transferred to your cup.

If you use a scale to measure your ingredients, be sure it is accurate (minimal differences can affect brewing times). Pre-weighed packages of ground coffee are available at specialty shops, but if you want to find out what works best with your taste preferences, weigh your beans first.

Use Freshly Ground Coffee Beans

Grinding whole beans yourself is essential for producing good coffee. You’ll get a fresher taste, and it’s also easier to control how fine or course the grounds are.

If you grind your own beans, it’s best to grind them right before brewing, so they’re as fresh as possible and retain as much flavor as possible.

Coffee that stays around long after grinding becomes stale and won’t give you the right taste and consistency you want in a triple-brewed coffee. Ground coffee begins to lose flavor as soon as it’s exposed to oxygen. The best way to ensure your coffee stays fresh and preserves that excellent taste is to grind your beans right before using them.

The Size of Coffee Grind

Grind size also plays an essential role in brewing a good cup of coffee. Grinding helps expose more of the bean’s surface area to water during extraction, so smaller particles lead to faster and more complete extraction in less time.

You can use any type of grinder, but the texture of the grinds will affect the quality of the resulting coffee, so it’s essential to do it right. You can buy pre-ground beans if you don’t have access to a grinder but still want good results.

In general, whole bean coffee retains its flavor longer than pre-ground, but either way, you should keep it in an airtight container away from light and heat.

Use the Right Water Temperature

The water temperature will determine the flavor of your triple brewed coffee. A higher temperature will extract more coffee from the bean, while a lower temperature will extract fewer flavors, and you will end up with a bitter-tasting coffee!

Water Quality

Water quality plays an essential role in the quality of coffee you get just the same as the correct water temperature does. It is best to use water with fewer minerals in it. And as you know, tap water has a lot of minerals contained in it. You can invest in a top-shelf water filter to filter your tap water whenever you want to brew your coffee.

Coffee Brewing Method

You can brew your triple-brewed coffee in several ways. The classification of these groups depends on how you introduce water to the coffee grounds. The coffee brewing methods are:

  • Pour-over method/Drip method/Filter method
  • Chemex method
  • French press method
  • Aeropress brew
  • Espresso machine method
  • Immersion method
  • Moka pot

Drip Method

The drip method is the oldest form of brewing coffee. Coffee brewers love it as it is fast and cheap. In this method, you pour hot water on the ground coffee beans in a paper filter and let the coffee drip slowly into a cup.

French Press Method

The french press( plunger) is another easy way of brewing superior and consistent coffee.  To brew your coffee using a French press, you soak your ground coffee beans in a press pot, steep, and strain in hot water.

This method ensures your coffee has flavorful essential oils, antioxidants, and caffeine. If you prepare your triple-brewed coffee using this method, you are bound to enjoy it even more.

AeroPress Method

The AeroPress coffee brewing machine is plastic and comes in 3 parts. It has a filter that sits at the bottom of the brew chamber in a coffee basket.

To make your coffee, you will put the coffee grounds in the brew chamber, where you will add hot water and immerse/steep the coffee. To extract the coffee, you will use a plunger by pressing it down to create air pressure that will force the brewed coffee through a filter and into a cup.

Stovetop Moka Pot

A stovetop coffee maker uses steam pressure to brew coffee. The steam pressure comes from boiled water from the bottom section of the Moka pot that passes through the ground coffee beans in the middle chamber. Your perfectly brewed coffee will sit in the higher chamber of the Moka pot.

Espresso Machine Method

The espresso machine brewing method is one way to get concentrated coffee. This method uses pressure to force hot water to penetrate finely ground coffee beans. The result is a flavorful, more concentrated coffee compared to coffee brewed using other methods.

This coffee brewing method produces an almost syrupy beverage as the process extracts both solid and dissolved components.

Frequently Asked Questions About Coffee

  • How do you make triple-brewed coffee?

Start by roasting your beans to perfection. Then grind them and steep them in hot water to extract the flavor and essence of the bean. This concentrated brew is then filtered and then re-steeped twice more. Finally, filter it one more time to remove any sediment, and you have your triple-brewed coffee!

  • How do you make sure your triple-brewed coffee doesn’t go stale?

It is best to grind your coffee just before brewing to preserve its freshness and prevent it from going stale. However, you can vacuum pack your coffee to ensure freshness and long shelf life. It is advisable to store your coffee in a cool, dry place and away from direct sunlight to ensure long shelf life.

  • Why is my coffee bitter?

Stale beans, over brewing, high-alkalinity water, or a combination of the three can add up to an overly bitter cup of coffee.

Use freshly roasted beans within two weeks of their roast date for best results. Grind them immediately before brewing for the freshest flavor.

Brew no more than 4 to 6 ounces of coffee at a time, and discard any remaining water from your brew basket after each pot. And if you live in an area with hard water, consider using bottled or filtered water for brewing your coffee.

Final Thoughts

Triple brewing your coffee is not only the best way to make sure your coffee tastes good, but it also means you have a much more potent brew in each cup. We have highlighted several ways to ensure you get a perfect brew, and we hope your next cup of triple-brewed coffee will be just as excellent.
